STATION ELEVEN, an elaborate installation by noted sculptor Joe Brubaker and a team of renegade creators known as the Exquisite Gardeners. Loosely inspired by Emily St. John Mandel’s novel, Station Eleven is their eighth collaborative installation.
Filling the entire space of Gallery 111, this kinetic artwork animates an abandoned village with “waterworks” carried through funnels and tubes. High up on a rickety track, a rusty train meanders through the ephemeral cityscape, passing through bricologue constructions made of painted cardboard, wood scraps, and wire. As the train passes a cobbled instrument, it activates a bow that strums its strings and rings a bell. In this steam punk assemblage, unusual sounds and unexpected materials delight and bewilder the senses. Makeshift huts, houses, stores and water towers stack up one upon the other, creating a Cinque Terre style hillside effect. Discarded trash becomes art in this utopian world, just as hope and resilience fight despair and fear in the post-apocalyptic setting of the eponymous novel.
