Remembering Animals: Rituals, Artifacts and Narratives

February 10 – March 17, 2018
Artist Reception: February 10, 4-6pm
Gallery Talk: February 12, 10am

California State University, Northridge Art Galleries is proud to present the exhibition, Remembering Animals: Rituals, Artifacts and Narratives, curated by artist, educator, and historian Julia Schlosser. The exhibition looks at the ways contemporary artists contemplate and investigate aspects of animal death, from the very personal loss of a companion animal to ubiquitous “invisible” animal deaths, including species extinction, factory farming, and road killed animals.

The exhibition will trace the evolution of a “visual language of loss” that artists use to acknowledge animal death, at the same time examining discrepancies in the ways that nonhuman animals are mourned following their deaths, and the larger implications of the treatment of non-human animals. Highlights include Steve Baker’s panoramic landscape diptychs featuring images of road killed animals, Curtis Bartone’s evocative explorations of the global effects of species depletion and Emma Kisiel’s photographed memorials to dead animals she encountered in daily life. A fully illustrated catalog will be available for purchase.

A major art exhibition space in the San Fernando Valley, the CSUN Art Galleries are located just a few miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The Galleries have mounted over 500 exhibitions since 1980 with yearly gallery attendance averaging 25,000 visitors.

Gallery hours are from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. on Thursday. More information and press images are available upon request; call the Art Galleries at (818) 677-2156 or visit www.csun.edu/artgalleries.
