Prospect New Orleans: A Case Study In Art And Crisis: Dan Cameron
In August 2005 the levees of New Orleans broke and 80% of the city was flooded for weeks. Within weeks, NY-based curator Dan Cameron, who had been a regular, longtime visitor, found himself drawn into conversations with key members the New Orleans art community about culturally rebuilding the city. By January 2006 he was laying the groundwork for what would become, in November 2008, Prospect.1, the largest international contemporary art triennial in the U.S. Conceived as a way of positioning contemporary art at the center of post-crisis civic activism, the three editions of Prospect so far – Prospect.4 opens in November 2017 – have provided an enormous cultural and economic boost for visual arts in the Crescent City, and galvanized local institutions to make the most of a vibrant artist community that is committed to the city’s musical and cultural heritage.
