Jane Callister: Barroco-pop
January 7, 2018 to March 4, 2018
Opening Reception: Sunday, January 7, 2018, 12:00 to 5:00 pm

December 1, 2017—Royale Projects invites you to experience the newest paintings by Jane Callister. This solo exhibition presents the artist’s painterly dialogue between two bodies of gestural works: earlier monochromatic grays and a more recent brightly multicolored palette. Jane Callister: Baroco-pop is replete with the tensions, pleasures, and hedonistic movements akin to orchestral flourishes of psychedelia and the ethereal, yet the artist brings the urgency of the current political climate to the foreground reminding us that vivid abstraction is not purely uncoded. In the same breath, these paintings bridge the artist’s ongoing exploration of place by connecting her upbringing on the Isle of Man to her adopted Southern Californian home. Visitors are encouraged to spend time and listen to color.

Jane Callister was born in 1963 in Douglas, Isle of Man, an independent island situated between England and Ireland. She lives and works in Santa Barbara, CA where she is an esteemed professor in painting, drawing, and intermedia at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Callister received an MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she studied with professor and art critic Dave Hickey. She received an MA from the University of Idaho and a BA with honors from the Cheltenham School of Art in England. Recently the Los Angeles County Museum of Art acquired her work featured in the publication Vitamin P: New Perspectives in Painting.

The artist had solo and group exhibitions at notable museums including Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; New Museum, New York; the First Prague Biennale, Veletržní Palace, Czech Republic; California Biennial, Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach; Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara; Art, Design and Architecture Museum at the University of California, Santa Barbara; DiverseWorks, Houston; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art; Las Vegas Art Museum; and Västerbottens Museum, Umeå, Sweden.
