Max Presneill has broken through to the “other side” and by this I do not mean he’s cavorting with spirits, but simply that he has in his second exhibition at the Garboushian Gallery in Beverly Hills created a stunningly rigorous body of work that even the dead would applaud! These paintings, while largely abstract, do engage a complex lexicon of familiar imagery that is at once codified and disparate, loose and controlled, succinct yet extraordinarily expansive. Working with grafitti marks and what the artist calls “redactions,” Presneill’s images are visual conundrums that resist their own impulses. They move toward a precise and avid articulation even as they recede gloriously into oblivion.
