Jake Ziemann’s elegantly understated sculptural works on view at Shulamit Nazarian are as delightfully witty as they are beautifully constructed. Ceramics is witnessing a renaissance lately, particularly in Los Angeles, and it is a real pleasure to come across an artist who really pushes his materials beyond the predictable “blob-like” status that sadly informs a lot of ceramic work being done today. Not only are these sculptures gorgeously crafted, but the content is largely metaphoric, drawing the viewer in. The strangely enigmatic, and when you can’t rise (2015) stands as a visual pun to Salvador Dali’s melting clocks, but more importantly, is its own oddly compelling universe.
