Russell Lives! is Eric Hancock’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. The exhibition combines the painter’s interest in the work of Fauvist masters like Matisse and Dufy with observation of his surroundings. The resulting works display both an airiness and a fullness that epitomizes the light and culture inherent to the city of Los Angeles. The title Russell Lives! refers to the artist’s dog. Although absent from the paintings, Russell acts conceptually as a cipher to explore the nature of declaration and the complex links between mundane life, identity, and human observation.

Since receiving an MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2008, Hancock has served as an Adjunct Professor of Art Foundations. His work is included in a number of high profile collections across the southeast. He has also published commentary and criticism in a number of international publications. His recent scholarly writing involves research into contemporary iterations of the creative process.
