Cindy Sherman’s stunning retrospective at The Broad constitutes a compendium of fiercely iconic imagery that has, for decades, influenced our cultural vision of how women are represented in the media. The exhibition spans 20 years and represents the largest holding (127 images) of Sherman’s work in the world. The exhibition is particularly successful in providing the viewer with a deeper analysis of the artist’s process, and how she goes about creating these often charged and unsettling images. Sherman works in series, and it is the scope and breadth of each series that communicates a larger, more comprehensive understanding of her commitment to modern culture.
