This inaugural exhibition of Perrotin’s new LA space, as well as the artist’s first show in the city, features Kato’s recent paintings, drawings and sculptures of vibrant, mystical humanoid figures that he has become known for, some in the form of intimate wood carvings and others painted on the faces of stacked aluminum boulders. Painting with his hands and playing with scale in his works, Kato also incorporates vintage miniature toys (such as various dog figurines) into his sculptures; in the center of the gallery’s floor, a large supine sculpture with toys planted along its body brings to mind a scene from the French and Czech sci-fi animation Fantastic Planet (1973), the film’s giant blue aliens also reminiscent of the artist’s subjects. A master of color, Kato creates a world of his own that is all at once spiritual, mysterious and delightful.
