The gallery’s inaugural exhibition, this group show of ten artists considers the tenderness of objects through various materials and scales, balancing between historical and futuristic sensibilities, as the exhibition title suggests. Spanning two floors and multiple rooms, the works contain various references, from art history to artificial intelligence to consumer culture; Joel Otterson’s three delicate wall sculptures (all of them less than four inches in width) are made with slices of moss agate with their abstract, organic compositions, framed in ornate silver frames with spikes along the edges and flowers on the corners. The sculptures of Tenant of Culture employ recycled garments and plastics, one of them a large suspended mass of outdoor backpacks that speaks as both an art object and symbol of modern commodity. While the works of all the artists are quite different aesthetically, they come together with the curatorial ideas of the specificity of time and consideration for the future.
