Filmmaker and installation artist Maureen Selwood has turned her attention to the tactile world of sculpture and drawing in her first solo exhibition “Sounding the Note of A” at Rosamund Felsen Gallery, and are we lucky to witness it. Extrapolating on gestures of resistance and female empowerment including the exploration of anti-Nazi activist Sophie Scholl and the music and theatrics of contemporary punk rock collective Pussy Riot, Selwood has created a series of drawings and sculptural works that not only expand on the essential dialogue of women’s work, but also amplifies our own imaginative relationship to it. Particularly mesmerizing are the large-scale sculptures made from Hydrocal and gesso on burlap over felt-lined chicken wire—mimicking Pussy Riots’ head gear—each one a vibrant and essential reclamation of craft, often pejoratively described as “women’s work,” yet Selwood’s sculptures are more like battle cries for the willingly dispossessed.
