To be a truly outstanding ceramicist one must possess a love of nuance and detail. Kathy Butterly’s exhibition titled “The Weight of Color” at Shoshana Wayne Gallery is more than a mere testament to these attributes, but an all-engrossing visual experience not to be missed. Made entirely of clay and glazed so precisely, the objects appear deceptively alluring as though like spiders, they might spontaneously sprout legs and slowly meander away. Highlights include the elegantly and sumptuous Koolaide and the equally appealing Armed. These objects have no “real” or verifiable function, yet the fact they are vessels makes them all the more seductive as we have the impulse to want to endlessly fill them up.
