It feels cliche to talk about the weather in a city where it’s always sunny and weather virtually does not exist, but my God it was such a beautiful night in LA on Saturday that the thought of being inside a stuffy gallery seemed criminal. To remedy that notion we decided to stop by a gallery that defies the word stuffy and attended “The Ocular Bowl” and “The Diet” at Kayne Griffin Corcoran.
The Ocular Bowl features works by Alex Olson, Agnes Pelton, Linda Stark, focusing on ideas of vision and how it occurs beyond the eyes, while the ‘The Diet’ is Michael Bell-Smith’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and uses ideals of strict regimented eating habits as its catalyst. We genuinely enjoyed both as we spent the first half of our time there browsing through the airy galleries, eavesdropping on eager artspeak and dodging a surprising amount of strollers containing the trendiest children in Los Angeles.
After having enough of the art and the kiddos, we headed out into the front courtyard, found an inviting spot to sit between the bougainvillea blooms and drank a few Modelos while we watched everyone around us grab a taco and hug it out on the lawn like they hadn’t seen each other in years. Nobody batted an eye as Mary Kate Olsen and Oliver Sarkozy strolled in through the front gate, grabbed a drink and enjoyed the opening with friends—also finding a spot between the blooms.
Attending Kayne Griffin Corcoran feels like coming home to your perfect LA backyard that just happens to be filled with good art, fashionable babies, a few good friends, and the occasional visit from low-key celebs. Good vibes only here and we’re not complaining about the weather.
The Ocular Bowl and The Diet will be on view until May 28th.
