bG Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Wrona Gall, opening at the gallery’s Santa Monica location at Bergamot Station. This exhibition marks a significant moment in the artist’s ongoing exploration of atmosphere, light, and emotional space, presenting a new body of paintings that reflect both continuity and evolution within her long and distinguished practice.Over the course of a career spanning more than four decades, Wrona Gall has developed a distinctive visual language rooted in abstraction and guided by an intuitive response to color, horizon, and movement.
CLOUDSCAPES have fascinated Wrona Gall for over 40 years. They create a dialogue between
light and air, provoking memories and uniting them with her imagination. As her muse, the sky
presents a forceful, even physical presence. It is constantly in flux, and always inspiring.
Choosing a dominant color sets her painting in motion. The resulting palette communicates
energy and movement to draw the viewer into the rich atmospheric realm she creates. Sixties and
seventies rock blasts a wonderful white noise that isolates her from distractions. She paints
directly with her hands —no brushes—to create images that float like water on air. A narrow
ground of abstracted strokes emphasizes the importance of the sky’s universality over individual
landscapes, illustrating her belief that what we share as humans is more important than our
differences. Her mantra is happiness inspired by the infinite changes above our heads. Every sky,
from a cloudless blue day to a vibrant yellow-orange sunset, provides an opportunity to focus on
happiness for ourselves and others. Subtle wire borders enable her vision to extend beyond the edge of her wood panels. After spending many years working in a Chicago loft studio, Gall relocated to Ojai, California in 2015, a transition that profoundly reshaped her relationship to light and landscape. The expansive skies and shifting atmospheric conditions of California have become central to her work, informing compositions that feel both grounded and expansive, intimate and immersive.
Wrona Gall’s paintings have been represented by numerous galleries in Chicago, Santa Fe, Boca Raton, Atlanta, London andToronto. Her Chicago museum exhibitions include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, the Spertus Museum of Art and the Illinois State Museum. In California, her work has been shown at the San Diego Art Institute, Ventura Botanical Garden and the Santa Barbara Contemporary Art Museum. In July she will have a one person exhibit at the Santa Paula Art Museum that will run through November.
