Patrick Painter Inc. is pleased to announce, Walk This Way, a group exhibition featuring works by Glenn Brown from his sci-fi series, and new artists Jason Lahr and Robert Peterson.
Jason Lahr was born in 1975 in Clarion, Pennsylvania, and he currently works and resides in Indiana. He received his MFA in drawing and painting from Penn State University, and is currently an Associate Professor of Painting at the University of Notre Dame. His works are in private and public collections internationally, including the Zuckerman Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA, and the Frans Masereel Centrum, Kasterlee, Belgium. He has shown in such institutions as the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art Museum in Gimpo, South Korea, and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art in Fort Wayne, IN. Lahr’s paintings combine darkly comedic text with pop-culture images, forming a narrative about working class identity, and the shaping of gender norms through mass culture. His painting style explores the question of how the visual language of digital culture can be co-opted through the practice of painting by integrating technology as a method to produce his work, impacting his use of color, saturation, and design.
Robert Peterson was born in Denver, Colorado in 1981, and currently lives and works in Lawton, Oklahoma. A self-taught artist who got his start in the art scene through Instagram, his works have been exhibited and sold in galleries across the U.S., including in New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Oklahoma City. Peterson’s works have been collected by such celebrities as hip hop mogul Sean Diddy Combs, Swizz Beatz, Fabolous, and Coach K, as well as athletes, Amare Stoudemire, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. His work is part of the collection of the Oklahoma billionaire Harold Hamm family, and has been commissioned by corporate companies such as Nike, Tony & Guy Hair, Monster Products, and Sol Republic. In 2017, Peterson made his mark on Oklahoma history by becoming the first African American to receive the artist of the year in Southwest Oklahoma. Later that year, Peterson also earned the Spectrum Spotlight Artist of the Year during Art Basel Miami. He describes his work as “spontaneous realism” portraiture, and he derives inspiration from such great contemporary artists as Warhol and Basquiat.
Glenn Brown was born in Northumberland, England in 1966, and currently resides in London. He studied at the Norwich School of Art and the Bath College of Higher Education, and received an MA in Fine Art from Goldsmith’s College. Brown has exhibited in a number of solo and group shows, and was short-listed for the Turner Prize in 2000. Brown frequently draws inspiration and material from artists Frank Auerbach, Salvador Dalí, and Rembrandt. He wildly distorts the scale and coloration of his source material, rendering the familiar strange, replacing thick brushwork with a photorealistic finish. This particular edition is from his science-fiction series, inspired by the paintings of Chris Foss and Tony Roberts, well-known science-fiction illustrators. He creates an apocalyptic bent to the works illustrated by grand towers, floating land-masses, and dark caverns in black and white.
