”I invite you into this dance of colors and textures, and the nonverbal conversation between the painter and the subject.” – J Maskrey
With a deep connection to California’s magnificent Sequoias, J Maskrey paints these beings with a fanatical flair personal to her insight. Varying colors and layered textures express her range of interpretation of these Giants as she enters into “in-depth conversations between two species”. Her work explores the connections between the natural and urban worlds, and the impact they have on each other. A portion of proceeds from this show will benefit the Sequoia Parks Conservancy Fund
ARCANE Space has expanded for this exhibition now occupying two spaces in the building. Come visit and discover ARCANE Annex.

“When like so many artists Maskrey first turned up in California—and first experienced the physical and spiritual thrill of the towering Redwoods and regal Sequoias, feeling that special arboreal communion—she too became enthralled with their soulful, sensual beauty. And she’s been painting them ever since. Across an array of stylistic approaches and emotional aesthetics, Maskrey describes how the thick impasto of her pigments “represents char and death, part bark, part life, part survival. It is a love story which involves the tension of beauty, destruction, and power.” As she increasingly comes to view them as sentient companions, her prismatic portrayals embody “the joy and the sufferings, the turmoil, and the pleasure” that give both trees and people their unique characters.” —Shana Nys Dambrot – 13 Things LA
