Keystone Gallery is pleased to announce One Hundred More Views of Japan, the latest exhibition of works by artist Tōshee. For his fourth solo show in Los Angeles, Tōshee has deepened the exploration of time, place, and memory that started with One Hundred Views of Japan, originally shown at Gabba Gallery in Los Angeles in March of 2016. The new show features several of the artist’s signature multi-layered mixed media panels interlaced with resin, as well as works on paper, sculptures, and a video installation. Romantic images of flowers, young women in traditional dress, and historical buildings are juxtaposed with neon drenched city blocks, bustling markets, and artful manhole covers.

Pairing realistic and expressionistic forms blended together with bright colors and supported by geometric elements, the collection offers the viewer an emotional experience of the unique syncretism of contemporary Japan: traditional and modern; persistent and ephemeral; natural and man-made.

Tōshee (aka Alain de Leonardis): (b. 1975) is an artist and screenwriter based in Los Angeles. A native of New York City, Tōshee studied design at Harvard under the late, great Toshihiro Katayama, internationally acclaimed graphic designer, sculptor and painter. His professional name pays homage to his teacher, who passed away in January 2013. Tōshee’s mixed media work features carving, painting, and layering techniques inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock printing, sumi-e, cel animation and the constantly evolving urban streetscape. Tōshee’s work has been exhibited in Miami, Toronto, and Los Angeles.

Daily viewing hours for this exhibit are 12-5pm or by appointment.
