Join exhibition artists Juan Capistrán and Kim Fisher for a conversation about their new work in COLA 2019.
About Juan Capistrán
Using strategies of poetic terrorism, the work of Juan Capistrán, interrogates sociopolitical structures. Through transdisciplinary projects, that question notions of class, identity, power and revolutionary, Capistrán investigates the rejection, assimilation and mutation created from the collision of singular and multiple systems of ideology. In 2016, Juan Capistrán and Hazel Mandujano opened Mandujano/Cell, a contemporary visual art project space that works with local, national and international artists on exhibitions and publishing.
Mandujano/Cell is comprised of three physical spaces: design studio, book store and gallery space.
About Kim Fisher
Kim Fisher (b.1973) lives and works in Los Angeles. Fisher studied at UCLA and Otis College, Los Angeles.
Fisher exhibits extensively within America as well as internationally, selected solo exhibitions include: ‘If…we’, Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago (2017); ‘A Little Bit of But’ LAXART, Los Angeles (2016); ‘Dirty Kitchen’, The Modern Institute, Aird’s Lane, Glasgow (2014); ‘Angus’, China Art Objects, Los Angeles, (2013); John Connelly Presents, New York (2010); and Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis (2003).
In 2018, Fisher exhibited within ‘This Brush for Hire’ at the ICA, Los Angeles, curated by Meg Cranston and John Baldessari); and in 2014, the artist participated in the Hammer Museum’s ‘Made in LA’, curated by Connie Butler and Michael Ned Holte. Fisher also presented work in the California Biennial and Whitney Biennial (both 2004). LAXART recently published a book to coincide with Fisher’s 2016 exhibition ‘A Little Bit of But’. Her 2011 publication produced by The Modern Institute includes excerpts by Joan Didion from ‘Slouching Towards Bethlehem’, which were first published in 1968.
