About the featured artists:
Alicia Piller As a method to locate the root of human histories, Alicia merges the new and discarded, experimenting with of a wide range of materials to construct large scale works that mimic forms of cellular biology. Piller envisions historical traumas, both political and environmental, through the lens of a microscope. Manipulating things like resin and latex balloons (stemming from herbackground as a clown); each work becomes a biological unfolding of time, examining theenergy around wounds societies have inflicted upon themselves and others.
Gloria Gem Sánchez is a Xicana-Filipina artist who works in painting, weaving, sculpture, and mixed media. Her use of everyday materials invokes the Xicanx concept of ‘Rasquache,’ which signifies a resourceful, working-class sensibility. Hair is a potent material for the artist, who describes its capacity to hold memories and trauma. Sánchez makes art as a form of resilience and therapy to process painful experiences.
Kayla Tange Through video, installation, sculpture, and more directly with performance, a large portion of Kayla Tange’s work addresses structures of spectatorship while redefining ancestral trauma through public and private rituals. Tange is interested in exploring the way human memory is both constructive and destructive. Strategically addressing construction of anxiety and desire, the artist simultaneously creates tactile, visual, and aural experiences. This strategy offers the viewer a space to address/confess notions of love, desire, death, and transformation.
