Crescent Tree Gallery is pleased to present Soojung Park: Prose Pages. The exhibition opens on July 6, 2024, and will run through August 30, 2024, with an opening reception on Saturday, July 6 from 6 PM to 9 PM. The reception is free and open to the public.
The materials and techniques used by Soojung Park to create her luminous works are a beguiling fusion of traditional and modern. She chooses clear acrylic sheets for their primary substance, recruiting the manufactured material’s ability to hold, channel, and transform light. She sands and abrades the acrylic, disrupting its smooth, glossy surface, and etches horizontal grooves across both their front and back faces. Ink and pigments are rubbed into these minute crevices to form irregular bands of color reminiscent of horizon lines or archaeological strata. Light animates the works, its interaction with the colors and various levels of translucency creating a radiance which seems to emanate from within.
While Park’s approach shares related concerns with artists of the Southern California Light and Space movement, the treatment of her surfaces reorients the subject matter of the work, focusing less on the phenomenon of light itself than on its interactions with the works’ physical properties. The works become actively entangled with light rather than its passive conduit, creating a discrete locus of perceptual experience through which the viewer can encounter limitless perspectives.
Soojung Park obtained a BFA from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and an MA in Fine Art from New York University. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in New York, Los Angeles, and South Korea, and her work is in dozens of private and corporate collections in the US and internationally. Park lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
