Jane Szabo’s Solo Exhibition Somewhere Else Opens at Forsberg Gallery Amidst Reflections on Home and Community Loss
Longview, WA – The Forsberg Gallery at Lower Columbia College is proud to present Somewhere Else, a solo exhibition by Altadena-based artist Jane Szabo, on view from February 18 through March 13, 2025.
The exhibition showcases Szabo’s deeply evocative series that explores themes of home, belonging, and the emotional landscapes of yearning and loss.
The exhibition comes at a particularly poignant moment for Szabo and her community. In January 2025, a catastrophic fire ravaged Altadena, destroying half the homes and businesses in the area. Although Szabo’s home was spared significant damage, the profound loss experienced by her neighbors has left an indelible mark on her spirit and sense of home. Somewhere Else resonates deeply with the idea of home—not just as a physical structure but as a space imbued with memories, aspirations, and identity.
At the heart of Somewhere Else are simply made houses, covered in maps and photographed in various natural and architectural settings. These maps, however, do not reflect the locations depicted in the images. Instead, they trace back to places from Szabo’s childhood or destinations she dreams of escaping to in the future. The resulting works map an emotional journey—one of searching for a sense of belonging, questioning whether the places we yearn for can ever truly satisfy our quest for home.
“Somewhere Else is a meditation on the journey of life, both literal and spiritual,” explains Szabo. “It’s about the longing for home—whether it’s a place we can no longer return to, one that no longer exists, or one we’ve only imagined.”
This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on their own relationships with home and community, particularly in the face of loss and displacement. The works are a poignant reminder of the resilience required to rebuild not only physical spaces but also the emotional bonds that make those spaces meaningful.
