If you see a man in the moon or a flock of sheep in fluffy clouds, you should experience the interactive, mixed media and sculpture exhibit, Alternative Viewpoints, on view at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art between February 2 through April 1, 2018.
Artist Lori Wolf Grillias enjoys exploring her passions of synchronicity, play, and pareidolia and encompassing these elements into her artwork. Ruta Saliklis, SLOMA’s curator and director of exhibitions, advises that the public slow down when viewing this exhibition—spending time with Lori’s paintings and sculpture and interpreting their own stories. Ms. Grillias’ paintings, sculptures, and The Spoon Tree project explore the subject of substance abuse and opioid addiction.
In preparation for this exhibition, Lori Wolf Grillias has also been collecting metal spoons at several locations in the area—incorporating them into her spoon sculptures. These sculptural pieces grapple with a difficult subject: opioid addiction. Spoons are symbolic in her sculptures, because they feed us, but they can also be used to feed an opioid addiction. The public is being given the opportunity to bring their own metal spoons to SLOMA over the course of this exhibition, and the artist will add them to her installation.
A public reception with the artist is on Friday, February 2 from 6-9 PM in conjunction with Art After Dark. Members-only preview 5 to 6 PM.
