Ah – deep, sustained, booming sounds. Around nine, nine-fifteen.

When Steve Martin’s character in the movie ‘L.A. Story’ (1991) is asked by his love interest, played by Victoria Tennant, what’s the best time to make ‘deep, sustained, booming sounds’ in Los Angeles, little does he know she plays the tuba.

Join us for an evening of music from ‘L.A. Story’ with recorded tunes and live performances–featuring special arrangements for strings, woodwinds and brass–including a rendition of ‘Doo Wah Diddy’ for tuba. This musical happening will take place in the exhibition inspired by the film that was written by its star Steve Martin as a love letter to Los Angeles. Listen to the works of Enya, Manfred Mann, Django Reinhardt and Charles Trenet, among others, while viewing works of art made in and about Los Angeles.

This event is free to attend, however, reservations are recommended.

About the exhibition

Titled for and inspired by the 1991 film beloved for its playfully satiric and unabashedly romantic foray into the land of Los Angeles swimming pools, Hollywood ‘machers,’ earthquakes, freeways and extravagant sunsets, Hauser & Wirth West Hollywood presents the group exhibition ‘L.A. Story.’ Co-organized by Ingrid Schaffner, senior curatorial director, and Mike Davis, senior director, in dialogue with the film’s writer and star Steve Martin, this exhibition brings together a cross-generational array of works by artists whose depictions of Los Angeles reverberate with the movie’s celebration of a place unlike any other. Featuring works by Carlos Almaraz, Kevin Appel, John Baldessari, Mark Bradford, Chris Burden, Vija Celmins, Eric Fischl, Mark Grotjahn, David Hockney, Luchita Hurtado, Friedrich Kunath, Florian Maier-Aichen, Catherine Opie, Hilary Pecis, Ken Price, Richard Prince, Calida Rawles, Jennifer Rochlin, Allen Ruppersberg, Ed Ruscha, Paul Sietsema, Henry Taylor and Lesley Vance.
