It’s the season of change, spirits in the air, the thinness of the veil between one world and the next. In this hauntingly beautiful time, the shape shifters arise, bringing with them a galvanizing view of sculptural form, geometric shapes, sinuous curves and twists. The work of artists Lydia Nakashima Degarrod, Karena Massengill, and Dave Clark is utterly unique.
The intricate and potent imagery each artist forms creates a delicate balance of meaning and magic, whether as a mobile, soft sculpture, lustrous stainless steel and cast glass work, or a mixture of dyes, plaster, metal, wood, acrylics, and wire. Quite literally, these artists make the shape of their materials shift into fascinating new forms.
Karena Massengill
Working in her own vast San Pedro Studio, this award-winning artist creates using stainless mild steel, glass, and other recycled found objects. From stunning figurative to abstract wall sculptures to public artworks throughout California and Canada, her electrifying, graceful work surges with both motion and serenity.
Dave Clark
Clark’s marvelous visual sleight of hand and eye dictates multiple meanings in his work, whether 2D or 3D sculptures. Inhabiting a wildly joyful yet supremely contemplative world of playful yet intuitive one-of-a-kind creations, Clark includes wall sculpture, stand-alone floor art, and even tables that are both pure art and fabulously functional.
Lydia Nakashima Degarrod
As the creator of lush, involving interdisciplinary art, Degarrod is influenced by the colors and textures of what surrounds her. The artist’s powerful, renowned work vibrates with complex meaning and a delicate but profound sensibility made of handmade paper, acrylics, and natural elements. Her work casts a spiritual spell of the very best kind.
