The personal is political, a slogan used in the 1960’s by the student movement and 2nd wave feminism emphasizes the connections between personal experiences and socio-political structures. It can be argued that all art is political. Reimagining America addresses the myriad issues in times of personal, social and economic uncertainties. The show explores the way images can move us by constructing and changing our social reality.
What is the scope of art and how does it deal with everyday politics? We invited artists to submit work that create discussions of power between people, real or imagined. The selected artists in the show challenge the social quo, traditional boundaries, and question the dominant discourse. Aesthetics, structures, personal, private and public, all exist in the same socio-political spaces. This show is our interpretation of how we can reimagine America through art and active participation.
Selected Artists: Erin Adams, Laura Brody, Lauren Mendelsohn Bass, Rick Dallago, Karen Duckles, Gwen Freeman, Jeanie Frias, Kathi Flood, Peter Hess, Sandy Huse, Cathy Immordino, Leah Knecht, Gina M., Randi Matushevitz, Mike McLain, Mike Mollett, Michael-René Prince, Samuelle Richardson, Kuniko Ruch, Sergio Teran, Amanda Thomas, Young Summers
About the Arroyo Arts Collective
The Arroyo Arts Collective was established in 1989 as a community organization of artists, writers and performers who live and work in Northeast Los Angeles, including the neighborhoods of Highland Park, Mt. Washington, Montecito Heights, Cypress Park, Lincoln Heights and Eagle Rock. Historically rich in tradition, the area bordering the Arroyo Seco was Los Angeles’ first cultural center at the beginning of the 20th century and the site of the Southwest Museum, the city’s first. A large concentration of artists continues to reside in northeast Los Angeles in some of the city’s most thoroughly multicultural and richly diverse neighborhoods.
