The gender-fluid Surrealist Claude Cahun once quipped, “Under this mask, another mask; I will never finish removing all these faces.” Cahun seems to suggest that our masks–code switching and learned affectations–are so infinite that any act of stripping them away only produces further encounters with artifice. Rather than attempting in vain to uncover some genuine essence underneath the superficies, perhaps the most authentic thing we can present to the world is in fact the masking–the layers accreted over time.
Under this mask, another mask is curated by Sam Adams, Ellen Johnson ’33 Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Allen Art Museum.
