Photographic Arts Council Los Angeles (PAC LA) presents a conversation with artist Arturo Soto and curator Claudia Pretelin on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at PAC LA Gallery in The Reef (1933 South Broadway, Suite 430, Los Angeles, CA 90007).
Marking the occasion of Soto’s exhibition “Today, something”—currently on view at the gallery through September—the discussion will explore the photographic series documenting the urban idiosyncrasies of the neighborhood in Mexico City where the artist grew up. The talk will explore the cultural markers present in Soto’s work and how they relate to their respective experiences of the city. This free, open-to-the-public event begins with doors opening at 1:00pm, followed by the conversation at 1:30pm and an audience Q&A. Advance registration is highly recommended. “Today, something” (2020-25) is a subjective documentation of Tepepan, the southern neighborhood in Mexico City where Arturo Soto grew up and where his parents still live. Soto focuses on details that carry cultural value but that often go unnoticed, such as the variety of independent shops or the distinctiveness of living a block away from a major prison. However, the project also captures more abstract issues, like the absence of communal spaces, the area’s uneven development, and the confluence of the personal and the political in the urban environment. The series was one of the winners of “Getxophoto” in 2023 and a finalist for the “Penumbra Workspace Program” in 2025.
