Tiger Strikes Asteroid Los Angeles is proud to present a survey of the fascinating and
poignant work of the late Pete Hampton (1940 – 2018), an artist deeply connected to his
childhood landscape and driven by a sense of loss and hope for the natural world. His work,
focused on saving the Puente Hills and La Habra Heights from encroaching development,
serves as both an artistic and environmental mission. Through his paintings, slide shows,
and homemade music, Pete Hampton crafted a vivid narrative about the changing landscape
of Southern California, where his beloved wilderness was steadily replaced by urban sprawl.
His art is not just about what was lost, but also about the yearning for a better, more
harmonious future.
The Lost Era, organized by his childhood friend and local artist, John W. MacLean, offers a rare
opportunity to see a collection of 50 paintings from Pete’s personal archive. These works
range from serene depictions of the night skies over Whittier to more unsettling, nightmarish
imagery. The underlying themes of loss, yearning, and hope are present throughout his body
of work. The show is a tribute to Pete Hampton’s unique artistic vision and his tireless
dedication to preserving the natural world he loved. It is a celebration of his legacy and a
chance to appreciate the work of an artist whose contributions were far ahead of their time, yet
remain deeply relevant today.
