Lauren Quin: If It Were A Snake It Would Have Bit Me

‘If It Were A Snake It Would Have Bit Me,’ Lauren Quin’s first solo show in Los Angeles, presents a body of work characterized by a nimble image and a sentimental mark. Dipping into the networks of an organism, these paintings are biotic, and they need for their small and large elements to coexist as a whole being. With a drag of a dull knife or the tip of a fingernail, fine-lined drawings are carved into wet paint on the surface. They are sharp marks that pull themselves up and away from the whole of the painting; incisions that linger in a shallower focal plane, only to be discovered with a certain degree of intimacy.
Contrast is teased out and deployed to make the paintings swarm, dissolve, implode, and sink, challenging the perceptive field of painting. References are drawn widely from Charlene Von Heyl and Fernand Léger to surrealism and childish vandalism. Symbols flow into each other with excitement. Imagery evolves with repetition, much like the bend of a cast shadow is a sibling to the thing itself. Lauren Quin aims for the slipperiest of associations, because doubt yields discovery.
Lauren Quin was born in Los Angeles in 1992, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated with an MFA from Yale School of Art this spring (2019), attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in the summer of 2017, and earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015. She has exhibited in several cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Joshua Tree, San Francisco, and New Haven. Lauren currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
