Tiger Strikes Asteroid Los Angeles, in conjunction with Monte Vista Projects (MVP) is pleased to present Natural 20, a collaboration between artist-run spaces in Los Angeles and Austin.

An icosahedron is a polyhedron with 20 faces. ICOSA, the artist run group, is named after the icosahedron object. Formed in 2015 converting an old auto-body shop into a gallery space to show their work independent of traditional avenues. This exhibition marks an effort to work with other groups sharing the same self-determining and organizing philosophy. There is a rich national history of artist-run spaces dating back to the 1960’s. These third spaces, left of the mainstream, have provided a path in which artists can exhibit their work free from conventional constraints and determining voices. This exchange between ICOSA, TSALA, and MVP continues this tradition of artists creating their own alternatives while establishing ties between the Austin and Los Angeles art communities, thus broadening the scope of what is typically a localized effort.

Our co-curators, Monte Vista Projects (MVP), is an artist-run space. Started in 2007, MVP has collaborated with artists and practitioners in and around the greater Los Angeles arts community. MVP has served as a space to share ideas and cultivate exhibitions articulated in experiments and play.

Both TSALA and MVP built out our spaces one year ago this month in the Bendix Building, and to celebrate we have decided to co-host ICOSA in both galleries simultaneously.

This exhibition includes fifteen Austin-based artists from ICOSA:
Adrian Aguilera, Alyssa Taylor Wendt, Andrea de Leon, Betelhem Makonnen, Brooke Gassiot, Bug Davidson, David Bae, Elaine I-Ling Shen, Erin Cunningham, Jenn WIlson, Jonas Criscoe, Kate Csillagi, Matt Rebholz, Terra Goolsby, Teruko Nimura

:::

Tiger Strikes Asteroid is a network of artist-run spaces with locations in Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Each space is independently operated and focuses on presenting a varied program of emerging and mid-career artists. Our goal is to collectively bring people together, expand connections and build community through artist-initiated exhibitions, projects, and curatorial opportunities. We seek to further empower the artist’s role beyond that of studio practitioner to include the roles of curator, critic, and community developer; and to act as an alternate model to the conventions of the current commercial art market. Tiger Strikes Asteroid is a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization.
