Katie Stubblefield’s marking Matter, speaks not only to the destruction wrought by natural disasters but also to the unintended consequences of humanity’s persistent desire to inhabit landscapes that resist permanence. California has long existed in a state of negotiation with its environment—fires, floods, earthquakes, drought, and rising seas continually reshape both the physical terrain and the cultural imagination. Stubblefield’s work asks us to consider what it means to build ever more sophisticated systems in places where nature ultimately refuses to yield.
Her drawings are informed by extensive research into historical fire and flood zones, seismic fault lines, climate projections, and the visual language of mapping itself. These references intermingle with direct observation, producing compositions that occupy the space between documentation and speculation. The transparent plexiglass becomes more than a support; it functions as both window and archive, allowing multiple temporalities to exist simultaneously. Layers of drawing accumulate like geological strata or overlapping memories, inviting viewers to look through the work as much as at it.
