(LOS ANGELES, CA) – OPEN MIND ART SPACE is pleased to present “56 45 25”, featuring abstract paintings and drawings by German artist JONAS MUELLER-AHLHEIM in his first U.S. solo exhibition. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, September 28th from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM. The exhibition will be on view for two weeks from Saturday, September 28th through Friday, October 11th, 2019.
“56 45 25” consists of gestural abstractions on paper and un-primed raw canvas by JONAS MUELLER-AHLHEIM. The title of the exhibition refers to the dimensions in centimeters of the artist’s luggage, in which he will be transporting his artworks from his studio in Copenhagen to Open Mind Art Space in Los Angeles. Like articles of clothing, the raw pieces of paper and canvas are quickly and unassumingly packed – only the essentials are selected to survive the brief journey. Upon his arrival at the gallery, each item will be unpacked, unfolded and hung on the walls like an intimate arrangement of personal belongings from a stranger’s suitcase. Jonas explains, “Despite rush and restlessness in the creation and handling, or perhaps precisely because of this, the standstill of the pictures moves into the foreground and creates a moment of rest, an easy handling of the picture with the raw gesture, which does not want to hide behind facades.”
JONAS MUELLER-AHLHEIM (German, b. 1993) is an artist interested in creating visual experiences through painting, mixed media sculpture and video installation. His work explores concepts of time and place, and the role of materials and objects in re-contextualizing a particular space. He is co-founder of an artist-run project space in Karlsruhe, Germany called “sspatz”, which aims to create new ways of connecting local arts communities on a global scale by providing a space for artists to construct temporary immersive installations for an inclusive audience. Jonas recently completed an artist residency at “After 1920” in San Diego, California, and is currently an artist in residence at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark.
OPEN MIND ART SPACE is a contemporary art gallery located in West Los Angeles that features a diverse blend of talented emerging artists, and aims to facilitate a curatorial process that allows its artists to create impactful work. Its mission is to inspire and challenge the local Los Angeles community by providing a comfortable, engaging space for reflection and dialogue.
