MICHAEL PRENTICE: FORGED IN STONE TO DEBUT IN HOUSTON
Major retrospective exhibition to coincide with filming of upcoming documentary about the acclaimed sculptor
WHO: Michael Prentice, acclaimed American post-war and contemporary sculptor, philanthropist and subject of upcoming documentary film.
WHAT: Join art collectors, curators and art enthusiasts at Michael Prentice: Forged in Stone, the largest and most comprehensive retrospective of Prentice’s work. The career-spanning retrospective showcases more than 200 sculptures, drawings, historical photographs and other archival materials not previously seen by the public and includes the first major catalogue of Prentice’s work.
Prentice’s monolithic granite, Carrara marble, basalt and bronze sculptures have been featured in the high-profile art collections of Hubert de Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent, Jane Blaffer Owen and São Schlumberger. Among the many public and private clients that have commissioned his work, Prentice created monumental granite doors for Cartier’s Fribourg, Switzerland headquarters.

MORE: Prentice’s prolific artistic accomplishments spurred his philanthropic endeavors. His commitment to re-establishing the collaboration between the artist and the architect led Prentice to establish the Sharpstown Prize for Architecture, in partnership with the University of Houston’s Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design. In 2020, Prentice founded The Alta Arts, a non-profit organization to enhance and elevate art and architecture in Southwest Houston. The organization is named in honor of Prentice’s grandmother, Alta Rockefeller Prentice, who bequeathed her home to The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), which helped expand the museum’s footprint.
