MEDIUM explores the artist’s choice, relationship to and engagement with materials — challenging traditional use, questioning perception and revealing a new existence. Each work investigates materiality as language, as magic, as a medium of expression. Materials are transformed through artistic touch and manipulation, while still maintaining their own agency — a dance between medium and maker. Through the harnessing of material, a tangible intimacy unfolds as one begins to understand and even become it.
Definitions of MEDIUM:
– the intervening substance through which impressions are conveyed to the senses or a force acts on objects at a distance
– a substance regarded as the means of transmission
– a mode of artistic expression or communication
– a way of communicating information
– an individual held to be a channel of communication between the earthly world and a world of spirits
