For his first solo exhibition at Summerjax Studios, Culver City, CA, Justin Cooper presents a compilation of installations bringing together works from 2019 to 2024. Justin Cooper’s practice is motivated by recontextualization, and the presence of absence. His work consists of art objects in various forms, which provoke questions surrounding taste, class, sexuality, consumerism and the urgency of the modern world. Lately, Cooper has been exploring “the objectification of cultural icons and their disposal. Furthering the idea around creating and destroying whereby the creative and destructive gestures are one and the same. I always try to work with an awareness of the materials, color, and construction as it relates to the content.” This exhibition, Cooper says, “draws from the allure of the shiny object that pulls you in, people watching, waiting for their chance to get on while others get off. The ‘one-on one-off’ never stops and can sometimes become disorienting, even dysfunctional.”
