Curatorial Text:
There’s a whimsical and yet mysterious way in which Juan Caruncho approaches his art. He’s deeply gifted with the endless creativity of Cuban art. Nothing he does is left to chance and if one is to pay close attention to his work, one finds symbolism mixed with an acute eye for our world’s troubles.
His works are a cornucopia of life itself, filled with lizards, horses, birds, humans, and so on. All interacting in a chaotic yet rhythmic way. The scatter on the paper and yet then never overlap each other in importance. To see his work is to understand that wherever we are, that’s the center of life, which is to say the center of life cannot be placed on anything, and it’s always where we are.
For the onlooker, confronted with his work, it is very important to let his prejudice and preconceptions behind and immerse in a world that’s both unique and universal.
