“The Black Series and its Evolution”
Ignacio De Mattos conceived the Black Series as a period in which he explored both Calligraphy and the Subconscious. He found inspiration in the wonderful tradition of Eastern Calligraphy, through its cadence and effortless symbolism, its rhythm and mystery. He saw it as a way to unravel a world while painting it in white and black.
A world where the subconscious speaks in symbols and the conscious mutates into rhythmical images. As he delved deeply into this world, the series became something essential in his creation and now his entire work revolves around this principle, rationality, and irrationality, light and dark, both ever present in our lives. Soon, black, and white needed a conversation within the canvas so he turned to red, bold, dramatic, obvious, and emotional. In doing so he gave his work a deeper layer. A layer wherein the dialogue of Life becomes a conversation between the conscious and the subconscious. And just as Carl Jung stated, we begin to understand our life when we’re capable of acknowledging our subconscious.
