Conceived by artist Mary Fagot, F L O W ! is an invitation to discover the magical nature of the physical environment around us. Over the summer, a series of three interconnected installations will fill the OXY ARTS space. Each installation explores a unique scientific principle essential to our day-to-day lives but that we often don’t think about — Fluids, Light, and Optics.
Geared towards youth ages 5-12, but captivating for all ages, the installations offer an encounter with fundamental principles of physics through interactive art experiences, inspiring a sense of wonder and curiosity along the way.
F L O W ! reverse engineers the learning process. The installations are an invitation to be immersed in the wonder of our physical world, then grapple with the “how” and “why” behind the experience. After exploring the installation, visitors enter a gallery space where hands-on models and interactive activities provide scientific context. A series of free, interactive workshops accompany each installation cycle.
You’re encouraged to visit all three installations throughout the Summer! Visit our website to reserve free timed entry tickets and sign up for workshops: https://oxyarts.oxy.edu/exhibitions/f-l-o-w
The gallery will be closed in between installations during the following dates: June 25 – July 4 and July 17 – July 24.
Installation Dates:
FLUIDS – June 11 – 24
We often forget that air is there because it is difficult to sense it. This immersive installation makes the air around us visible and invites us to re-think what occupies the space around and between all of us.
LIGHT – July 5 -16
Our eyes and brains are constantly working together to translate light into color. Enter a special color controlled room where certain colors and shapes will magically appear and disappear to show us the different ways our eyes and brain interpret colors.
OPTICS – July 25 – Aug 7
Light travels in waves, but did you know it also travels along straight paths?! Visit OXY ARTS for an optical experiment, where you can see how light moves, creates images, and explore how you can interact with it using reflectors and prisms.
