ERICA EVERAGE: DIVINE HAG
MFA Thesis Exhibition
February 13th-17th, 2023
The Bolsky Gallery is pleased to present DIVINE HAG, a thesis exhibition by MFA Fine Arts candidate Erica Everage.
Blurring the line between figuration and abstraction, the colorful and gesturally expressive paintings in Divine Hag arise from Everage’s fascination with ancient and prehistorical sculpture, cave paintings, and artifacts found in Neolithic megalithic structures. Taking inspiration from lesser-known origin stories and the discourse of archaeomythology (the study of archaeology through the lens of mythology) she uses the medium of painting to interpret mysterious ancient sculptures of goddesses and symbols of feminine power, such as Sheela-na-Gigs, Baubos, and figurines mislabeled as “Venuses.” Everage imagines these bold figures as taliswomen – totems of unabashed creative feminine energy.
Stepping into the realm of the Divine Hag, you enter a safe space where erotic expression, rage, intuition, and other qualities are free to course through the feminine bodies that are depicted around you. The exhibition also features the artist’s dance paintings, which are 2D interpretations of her dances. Her dance practice consists of improvised, uninhibited, body-led movement and is a celebration of embodiment – of feeling a sense of safety in, and ownership of, one’s body.
DIVINE HAG runs Feb 13th through February 17th, with a public reception on the evening of Thursday the 16th, from 6:00-8:30pm. Wine, beer and other refreshments will be served at the reception.
