WE ARE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME JORI FINKEL TO AJU, AS THE FIRST SPEAKER FOR THIS YEAR’S SERIES OF LECTURES, DISCUSSIONS IN CONTEMPORARY ART. ORGANIZED BY THE SORAYA SARAH NAZARIAN PROGRAM IN THE FINE ARTS, THE SERIES CONTINUES TO FOCUS ON ISSUES RELATING TO CONTEMPORARY ART, CENTERING ON LOS ANGELES, AND, MORE BROADLY, THE WEST COAST.

Jori Finkel’s new book It Speaks to Me features 50 artists from New York to New Delhi on artworks that inspire them. But it all started in L.A.—with a series of interviews she did with artists here on artworks of their choice from local museums. Here she joins us to talk about the making of the book, the surprising picks by L.A.-based artists such as Mark Bradford, Suzanne Lacy and David Hockney, and the power of local art histories in a globally networked age.

The lecture is presented with University Women and will be followed by a book signing.
