ILLUMINED
Mystical, Spiritual, and Philosophical Texts, Transformed.
Over the past months, Los Angeles artist David Orr has been photographing spiritual, mystical, and philosophical texts — often one-of-a-kind hand-printed and illuminated manuscripts — from a storied Los Angeles institution, the Philosophical Research Society. Founded by Many Palmer Hall in 1934, their library’s private collection holds over 50,000 items. Aldous Huxley, Harry Smith, and Carl Jung all did research there.
Once he has made a photograph which captures the physical qualities of a particular book or text, he recombines it, creating an abstract form alluding to the worldview or mythology being represented while often obscuring the writing itself — evoking the ancient Daoist idea that “the deepest truths can never be captured by words alone.”
Images are dye infused onto 30-inch diameter archival Aluminum discs.
