To celebrate the opening of COLA 2019, experience a special performance of Katie Grinnan’s 5 Seconds of Dreaming, played by musicians Kozue Matsumoto and Eugene Moon. This performance will take place during the opening reception of COLA 2019 on Sunday, May 19 at 3 PM.
After previous iterations at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery and Commonwealth and Council, Grinnan’s project culminates with this final version in COLA 2019. The undulating forms of these wooden sculptures are adapted from EEG diagrams recording the artist’s brain activity during sleep and are arranged to mirror the hemispheres of the brain. Milled using a CNC machine, the sculptures’ digital means of production stands in contrast to their tactile, canyon-like wooden surfaces. Grinnan stringed each wooden piece to produce an instrument designed to be tuned, played and interpreted by musicians, thus expressing the artist’s thoughts in musical form.
COLA 2019 is an exhibition featuring new work by Enrique Castrejon, Juan Capistrán, Kim Fisher, Sabrina Gschwandtner, Katie Grinnan, Alice Könitz, Olga Koumoundouros, Sandy Rodriguez, Stephanie Taylor, Peter Wu and Jenny Yurshansky. These eleven artists are the recipients of the 2019 City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship for visual arts. The Fellows were selected by a panel comprising curators, educators, museum directors and past COLA Fellows. The fellowship provides each artist with $10,000 to produce a new body of work, which will be premiered at the COLA 2019 exhibition. “COLA Fellows are the types of unique civic entrepreneurs that we need in this city,” said DCA General Manager Danielle Brazell. “DCA is proud to honor these creative visionaries and nurture their symbiotic relationships with LA and other artists and the city’s history and identity as an international arts capital.” The exhibition will be accompanied by a public program as well as a catalog designed by Jody Zellen, a former COLA awardee.
The exhibition will be on view from May 23 – July 14, 2019. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday from 11 – 4 PM.
