Featuring Visual Artist: Miss Brightside
British artist, Miss Brightside, recently appeared looking for love on Fox’s hit show Love Connection. Aired 8/10 where the host Andy Cohen introduces her as “sexually liberated Katie”.
Brightside, not one to shy away from baring her soul, also creates wolf masks that represent ex-lovers.
“The masks are saturated with narrative representing a conflict between a female hunter and chaste childhood innocence and the artwork plays out my investigation into gender identification and sexual liberation. These provocative pieces are hand sewn and created from the childhood development fabric felt, exhibited using erotic items from the Pleasure Chest.” – Miss Brightside.
With role-play, children have a natural inclination to personify toys and invest the objects with human attributes. A child’s first desirable object, away from fist-to-mouth and its mother’s breast, becomes enriched with feelings. Both projection and self-identification mechanisms operate. The physical excitement the child has for the plush toy is akin to the climax of an orgasm.
Fantasy, play and storytelling enhance children’s desirable objects and Miss Brightside’s wolf masks are no exception – they are projections of her own attachments. The sexual allure and female prowess of these masks relate to Red Riding Hood, the morality tale used to warn pre-pubescent young women of the dangers of the wolves that lurk within the forest. In the film, A Company of Wolves (1984), writer Angela Carter, revises the Red Riding Hood fable. Charmed by the wolf, Red strays off the path and eventually turns into a wolf herself, thus becoming the hunter.
