Johansson Projects presents Between the Lines, a solo show with artist Blaise Rosenthal. This is the first exhibition of his “Overpaintings”, a group of small abstract works produced over a five-year period beginning in 2012.The exhibition’s title, Between the Lines, refers to the position that these works occupy within the artist’s broader practice. More familiar from Rosenthal are his multi-panel charcoal and acrylic on canvas paintings, as featured in Mirage—the artist’s inaugural solo show with the gallery in 2016. Highly premeditated and composed of numerous applications of staining and obsessive drawing, these previously-exhibited works emerge from a rigorous and calculated methodology. By contrast, the Overpaintings, are created almost entirely without preconception. Produced in parallel with Blaise’s more restrained primary work, they are the layered result of spontaneous painterly outbursts that occur as a response to, and in respite from, a disciplined focus and strategy.
