Between Two Worlds, a pop-up exhibition of sixteen new oil paintings by Sophie Morro, is coming to Open Box Stage in Los Angeles, CA.
These works explore what is referred to in literature as portal fantasy. Like Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, the paintings portray “a symbol of all the beauty and strangeness and heartbreak and triumph to come.” They serve as windows into the past and future as well as to other realms entirely.
Through magic mirrors, Los Angeles freeway tunnels and enchanting koi ponds, we are transported through time and to many secret places. Memories are revisited and reframed while future projections mystically appear. Otherworldly scenes unfold to return the viewer home with a new perspective.
Drawing on for the artist’s personal experiences of living and studying between several countries and cultures, this series stands as a metaphor for wandering between two physical worlds, while simultaneously traveling within.
