Wönzimer is pleased to present Attention, a solo exhibition by Brian Randolph. Bringing together drawings and paintings from across several distinct bodies of work, the exhibition offers an immersive look into Randolph’s studio practice and his investigation into the unseen geometry that shapes life.
Randolph’s practice is rooted in the perception of an intrinsic, woven grid operating behind the universe, an inner light and dynamic structure that becomes visible in natural phenomena like wave interference patterns on water. In deeper states of vision, this underlying field reveals a living tapestry of script scrolling and pulsing through space and time. Randolph’s compositions serve as an iconographic distillation of this visionary experience.
Driven by a desire to cultivate a stable and focused state of mind in the studio, Randolph employs symmetrical and repetitive structures that lock in the visual field. His slow, systematic execution allows him to dwell deeply within the particular frequency of each artwork. Guided by intuition rather than a rigid conceptual process, Randolph stays close to the subtle thread of inspiration, letting each piece generatively inform the next.
A central thread running through the exhibition is Randolph’s exploration of the constructed line. Approached through varying techniques, such as dense applications of opaque colored pencil or enamel paint in the negative space, or double lines simulating overlapping three dimensional strings, these works highlight how a unified philosophy expands across different media and styles. Unlike previous solo exhibitions governed by strict single parameters, Attention utilizes the gallery space to present these diverse visual explorations simultaneously.
