MATTER STUDIO GALLERY is pleased to announce A Matter of Form, an exhibition of Peter Mayor’s abstract architectural sculptural forms. Mayor creates these structures with multiple materials ranging from wood, stainless steel, bronze, aluminum, and steel. His current body of work focuses on the simplicity of manipulating a spatial plane by “folding” and “bending” the raw materials to describe and define dimension, balance, and movement, creating graceful forms. Mayor frequently speaks about the balance and rhythm that is the necessary element in music, where the empty or silent spaces between the notes are as relevant and give definition to the solid sounds created by the instrument making the note vibrations. Mayor finds a parallel in these elements that make up his current artwork. Like music, Mayor’s forms define the open or empty spaces, while the mass of each structure reverberates with a serene balance creating the harmony or vibration within each sculpture.
KCRW’s Edward Goldman host of “ART TALK” segment airing on All Things Considered, LA’s largest NPR affiliate will be interviewing Peter Mayor in the Gallery on April 7 from 2-4 pm. Don’t miss this insightful critic as Goldman presents a dialog of what motivates and inspires Mayor to create these Matters of Form.
