Alden Marin is both an Artist and a poet. Alden feeds the squirrels that come to his back porch. He gives them names and organic, grade-A almonds. Sometimes he sees a bird while walking down the beach with his paints. Then he’ll pick up a dry stone and recreate what he saw on its surface. Only, it wasn’t really a bird. It was a woman with a funny, feathered hat on and a sarong tied across her waist. Sometimes he sees a cat and will pick up a fallen leaf on which to to paint its likeness. Only it’s not really a cat. It’s himself, or you, or your best friend, or your mother. He has a condition called Pareidolia, where he sees faces in everything including the most mundane objects like discarded packs of cigarettes and silver gum wrappers. Even those things can have lives of their own when attached to Alden’s imagination. And he practices the most brutal form of honesty. Ask him anything and he will give you an answer without hesitation. Alden Marin is an artist that can summarize your life and feelings into a single, beautiful line of poetry attached to a painting.

ANIMALS OF THE IMAGINATION

When you get the urge

To paint a pig &

It turns into a cow

Let it be a horse…

Wings, beaks, claws & tails

Make birds perfect

For painting–they have

So many points and colors

In motion, like a gemstone

Dogs come easily to me

Because I see so many

In my town–they’re

Endlessly intriguing

Friendly one minute;

Savage the next

Cats are about angles,

Cats are cute & cuddly

But remain mysterious;

Cats have it all…

Some days it feels

My head is like a zoo–

I need to get the animals out

Or they might become dangerous;

In the paintings they seem

More harmless & fun.
