Nino Mier Gallery hosts A Hug from the Art World’s latest exhibition — Howie Michel’s “The Elephant in the Room” — opening in Glassell Park at 2700 W Ave 34 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM on April 1, 2023.
On display, Michel’s latest works venture even more boldly into the place from which art retrieves images that seem mythical, personal, and universal — figures and landscapes we recognize at once though we have never seen anything like them. Lyrical, funny and fearless, joyous and scary, these paintings give us a lot to look at, if we take the time to look: a hot dog repurposed as a life raft, a hyena out of Zap Commix, a woodpecker-gladiator in ladybug armor, alligators, flesh, underwear, gold buttons, and always, the sacramental fish.
