Anish Kapoor is a master in “organic monumentality.” Working with literal organic matter including pigments and earth as well as nonorganic substances including resins and silicone, Kapoor has forged yet another series of complex and visually challenging sculptural works that simultaneously transgress predictable notions of identity while expanding the physical borders of the materials themselves. Works like the darkly luminous disk Tunneling Shadow appear like monolithic artifacts from a time long since passed, yet their formidable presence evokes a strangely contemporary appeal. These sculptures are oneiric divinations of the alchemical world and our very small place in it.
